Doctor vs Midwife

I forgot to mention that we are switching doctors. My Mercy Doctor (I won't name names) was great, but I felt rushed and "herded" through every time I went in. And patronized. He was an older doctor, and I know he's very good, but it's more of the philosophy of "this has always worked for me, so just let me do my job." Plus, he's going to be out of town the week I'm due, and his solution was to "just induce" me the Friday before he leaves. How convenient. And then there was his nurse...long story there, but she was more of the problem than the doctor.

So, Walt and I have been going to Lamaze at OU, and we both really like it. I'd also been hearing from other sources what a great Midwifery program they have there, and so....we switched! I haven't been to my midwife yet, but I'm pretty excited about it. Of course, if she thinks I'm "high risk", then I'll have to go to a doctor there, but if not, then we get to stick with her.

For those of you who think a midwife is a doula (which I may also have), or someone who delivers babies on rural farms on Little House, here is a quick def from OU's website:

Nurse Midwives provide personalized care and support for expectant moms with low-risk pregnancies. They also offer general women’s health services, such as annual physical exams.

More about our practice:

Our services are covered by all major health insurance programs and Medicaid.
Women desiring a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) are safely managed within our practice.
We have participated in more than 1,000 births at OU Medical Center – the only hospital in the state offering nurse midwifery services.
We are registered nurses, certified through the American College of Nurse-Midwives and recognized as collaborative partners by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Also, certified nurse-midwives can write prescriptions.

And, you have a doctor there on call, just in case you need one. I still haven't told my parents...

Well if they have the internet I think you just did tell them :)

I'm so glad you are back to blogging and informing us future mothers with all the questions we didn't even know there were!!!

Sounds good Saundra! I had that "herded in" feeling with my other doctor too. I wish I could have gone the midwife route too. I go to see my new doc today and find out more info about a natural birth for me. I kinda feel like i'm in this alone but still feel very motivated. I thought I"d share a site with you - lordof birth.com. Not very well organized but a lot of good info, it's based on a bible study.

I can't believe you're 27 weeks! It won't be long. I'm 37 today. I'd love to be able to bring our new baby to your shower in November...who knows, maybe it will work out.

Maybe we can talk this weekend.
love Shelly
