Hip "Click"

One more thing to thank God for...when the pediatrician checked out our sweet baby, he said that she had a "hip click". I had no idea what this meant, but was instantly thankful that my brother-in-law is an orthopedic resident in OKC now. Because I'd had a C-section, we had to stay in the hospital until Tuesday, which gave them time to set up an ultrasound on her hips and get the results back. Walt wheeled me down to the ultrasound room and I got to sit next to her and give her her first pacifier (drenched with sugar water) to keep her calm while they did it. She did great, I was a stressed out mess. The next day (or maybe that afternoon) the one time Walt left to go home and get some stuff, the Ortho resident came in to talk to me about the ultrasound. He said she had Hip Displasia in her left hip, and that she would have to wear a Plavo brace (or something like that.) I tried to stay calm, Walt's mom was there, but was freaking out. I asked him if she wore the brace would she be ok, he said there was no guarantee, but that her chances were a lot better since it was caught at birth and not later on.

I prayed that God would make it just go away and not be what they thought it was.

The next day the Attending Orthopedic Pediatrician came in with the resident from the day before, and this awful brace contraption. It was awful, straps going over the shoulders and pulling her legs up tight to her sides. I tried to stay calm. The attending looked her over and pulled her hips this way and that. He said to the resident, "Now, what was it you felt?" The resident said, "Well, a hip 'click." The attending said, "A 'click', huh? You sound like a pediatrician...a 'click.'" Sort of disgusted like. I almost felt sorry for the resident! Then he told us that she wouldn't have to wear the brace, and should develop fine without it, and that we would just have to follow it closely and have some follow up ultrasounds to check her more.

Once again, God is so good! If I hadn't had the c-section, we would have had to go back into the hospital asap to have her original ultrasound, and all the worry...

Please pray that she will continue to amaze the doctors, and that her hips will be fine, and no brace will be needed!

My uncle had that when he was born and had to wear the brace. But not for long and he turned out just fine. I'll keep her little hips in my prayers though!

Hi Sandra, it's Kelsey (Wendy's sister-in-law). I had the same hip thing and had to wear a brace the first 6 months of my life! My mom just gave me some of my baby clothes and she had saved my little brace. It was sad to look at, but I'm so glad for my parents (who were first time parents with me) that this was the least of my problems! I hope your sweet little girl doesn't have to wear it, but even if she has to she will be just as beautiful as ever and you will be stronger for it!
